Lyon Mountain Iron: Boom, Collapse, and Aftermath

\n\n

In the shadow of the Adirondacks, Lyon Mountain once pulsed with iron-fueled ambition. From the 1880s, this company town flourished atop one of the richest iron ore deposits on Earth. At its peak, over 3,500 souls—immigrants, miners, and craftsmen—labored beneath its rugged hills.

\n\n

The Industrial Web

The Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company (COIC) bound the landscape together with narrow-gauge rail, steamboat flotillas, and the immense Bellmont catalan forge. This forge, fed by 1.5 million bushels of charcoal yearly, grew into the largest bloomery in the world, a furnace whose fiery heart demanded endless forests and ceaseless toil.

\n\n

Ore traveled from Lyon Mountain to Merrill’s Landing, then floated down Chateaugay Lake to the Bellmont forge. First poled by hand, then tugged by steamships like Maggy, this aquatic highway bore the heavy arteries of Adirondack industry.

\n\n

Collapse and Exodus

1893 shattered the rhythm. COIC shuttered the Bellmont forge, pivoting to a modern furnace at Standish. Overnight, Bellmont fell silent—logs ceased to fall, charcoal pits smoldered out, and ore barges sat tethered and still. Where once echoed hammer and bellows, now only the wind spoke.

\n\n

The steamboat fleet dissolved. Some vessels ferried tourists; others rotted into the shoreline. The Emma, captained by Paul Merrill, soldiered on as the last steam craft until 1916—mail carrier, supply runner, and ghost of a vanished era.

\n\n

The Human Toll

Hundreds of laborers—miners, forgemen, steamboat hands—were cast adrift. Some packed their tools and followed iron’s siren song elsewhere. Others stayed, binding wounds with whisky, fiddle tunes, and camaraderie forged in fire and soot.

Iron to Outlaw

Out of this economic vacuum, a darker industry grew. By the 1920s, the same mountain roads and hidden lakes that once hauled ore now spirited whisky southward. Smugglers, hijackers, and backwoods roadhouses replaced furnace crews. A new kind of fire burned in the North Country—one of rebellion, survival, and outlawry.
