\n Read only the essence. Many books don’t deserve deep reading.\n Some are linear and over-explained; some are pure entertainment; some are heavily packaged opinions.\n Over-consuming these can weaken independent thinking—because you’re being fed conclusions instead of building them.\n

\n Texts that require interpretation and analysis demand the brain’s core skills:\n logic,\n composition, and\n connection.\n
\n Reading levels form a pyramid.\n Only about 1/1000 or even 1/10,000 books are truly great for training thought and comprehension.\n
\n Classics have a signature trait: in different life stages, you revisit them and learn something new—higher, deeper, stranger.\n
\n Choosing excellent books is a major lever for improving reading literacy.\n

Level 1

\n

Elementary Reading

\n

\n The escape from illiteracy: understanding the literal meaning of words, grammar, rhetoric, and the basics of logic.\n This level lets you grasp what a text is saying at face value.\n

\n\n

\n

Development Stages

\n

Reading readiness: begins from birth, developing foundational abilities until about age 6–7.
Simple reading: learning to read and handle easy texts.
Rapid vocabulary building: expanding word knowledge quickly.
Mature basic reading: stable competence at the foundational level.

Level 2

Skimming (Inspectional) Reading

\n\n

\n In a limited time, grasp the key points of a book—often a very short time, usually too short.\n That’s why inspectional reading is about orientation, not certainty.\n

Purpose

\n

Determine the book’s positioning and direction.
Decide whether it’s worth reading (value, interest, authority, classic status).
Decide whether to proceed to analytical reading.

What is this book about?
How is it structured?
What parts does it contain?

\n Before skimming: define your purpose and clarify the questions the book should answer for you.\n

\n

Skimming Techniques

\n

\n Check the title page, then (if present) the preface.\n
- Look at the subtitle and stated aims.
- Notice the publisher and author background.
- Build a rough classification in your mind and connect it to similar books you’ve read.

\n Study the table of contents.\n
- Get a structural overview of the whole book.
- \n Principle:\n major arguments and evidence matter more than details.\n Grasping the whole structure is more important than reading every word.\n
\n
\n If there is an index, inspect it.\n
- Quickly evaluate the scope of topics and referenced authors/systems.
- Use keyword clusters to preview the “knowledge feast” the book may offer.
\n
\n Sample a few chapters that you care about.\n
\n Flip through a few pages—but not too many.\n
\n For difficult books that require multiple readings:\n do a full pass first to gain context.\n During this first pass, don’t consult reference tools, reviews, excerpts, guidebooks, or dictionaries.\n

Analytical Reading

\n

\n Analytical reading is a complex, systematic method.\n Francis Bacon’s famous reading metaphor maps cleanly here:\n

Tasting: some books deserve only a quick sampling.
Swallowing: some deserve a fast whole-book read to get the main outline.
Chewing and digesting: a few deserve deep analysis to truly understand them.

Step 1: What is the book about?

\n

State the whole book’s topic in a short sentence (clear and concise).
Identify the question(s) the author is trying to answer or the problem being solved.
Outline the major parts in order and relationship; then outline each part’s structure too.

\n

Step 2: What does it say in detail?

\n

Interpret the author’s key terms and reach shared definitions.
Extract the author’s main propositions from the most important sentences.
Reconstruct the arguments (causes, reasons, and conclusions).
Determine which problems are solved, unsolved, and which the author admits can’t be solved.

Step 3: Critique as dialogue

\n

Reading is a conversation with the author—commentary is part of completion.
Independent judgment requires the ability to comment and criticize.
Use three lenses: grammar, rhetoric, and logic.

Intellectual Etiquette (General Rules)

\n

\n Don’t rush to comment.\n Unless you can present the outline and interpret the book, avoid saying “I understand” or declaring agreement/suspension/disagreement.\n
Don’t argue for the sake of winning.
\n Before critique, prove you can distinguish knowledge from personal opinion.\n

Standards for Criticism

\n

Show where the author lacks relevant knowledge.
Show where the author is factually wrong.
Show where the author is illogical.
Show where the author’s analysis or reasons are incomplete.

\n A book can be useful without being flawless. The best learners are also the best critics.\n

\n

Level 4

\n

Comparative (Syntopical) Reading

\n\n

\n Synthesize multiple perspectives and produce your own creative, valuable insights.\n This step breaks you out of a single author’s mental order.\n

\n\n

\n Comparative reading treats a theme as the unit of analysis.\n You read across books, documents, and references from multiple angles, building a personal viewpoint.\n

\n\n

\n

Step 1: Preparation — Define the research field

\n

Define a clear, specific, and effective research theme.
Create an experimental bibliography (libraries, expert suggestions, indexes).
Skim the whole list, decide which sources fit, and form a clear concept of your theme.

\n

\n\n

\n

Step 2: Comparative reading — Read all selected sources

\n

Skim all theme-relevant sources and locate the relevant chapters/sections.
Create your own vocabulary to achieve shared meanings across authors (even if they don’t use your terms).
Build a neutral set of propositions, framed as a chain of questions that most authors can answer or address.
Identify major and minor issues; place each author’s differing answers beside each issue.
\n Remember: authors may not explicitly share issues.\n Sometimes you must interpret viewpoints outside their main concerns to construct your issue map.\n
Analyze and order problems/issues to highlight the theme: common issues first, uncommon later; define relationships between issues clearly.

Reading Pyramid & Book Selection

\n The layered model is also a selection engine. Use it to protect your attention.\n Most books get only a skim; a few earn analysis; a tiny set earns comparison across sources.\n

Why “essence-first” works

\n

It reduces the risk of passively inheriting other people’s conclusions.
It preserves time for thinking: logic, composition, and connection.
It makes rereading classics more powerful (new stage → new insight).

Practical decision rule

\n

Skim first to classify and decide.
If it’s useful but not deep: extract the outline + key points and stop.
If it’s deep: do analytical reading (structure → terms → arguments → critique).
If it’s a theme you’re researching: do comparative reading across sources.
