Why the event is not a clean test of PED effects

The Enhanced Games mixed multiple confounds: varied drug protocols, incomplete disclosure, equipment differences, uneven athlete quality, short preparation windows, non-standard event incentives, and a commercially interested organizer. It can generate hypotheses and public arguments, but it cannot answer “how much do PEDs improve elite performance?” with scientific precision.

The answer changes depending on drug class and performance endpoint.

Sport relevance: plausible in events where alertness, aggression, fatigue resistance, or repeated effort matter.

\n Key distinction: A large physiological change is not automatically a large competition improvement. Elite performance is constrained by technique, event specificity, pacing, coordination, injury, psychology, and field depth.\n

Are PEDs usually “marginal”?

Not in the simple sense. Anabolic agents can generate changes that are too large to call trivial. The observed record is therefore not merely “clean athlete + drug on the day.” It may be “athlete whose whole developmental path was pharmacologically altered.”

It is fair to say that many doped champions were still extraordinarily gifted. It is not fair to say that their clean performances would probably have been nearly identical. The evidence usually does not allow that level of reconstruction.

Why this matters for judging records

If PED response is heterogeneous, then the most visible doped record-holders may not represent the average PED effect. Why enhanced athletes sometimes underperformed expectations

Possible explanations include weak or mismatched protocols, too little preparation time, event-specific irrelevance of chosen substances, side effects, poor current form, weak athlete selection, lack of normal elite competition pressure, equipment confounds, or simple overhype.

Why clean athletes could win

Because drug status is only one input. A current or near-current elite athlete can beat a pharmacologically enhanced but weaker, older, less-prepared, or less technically suited competitor. This says little about what PEDs would do inside a fully elite, equally prepared field.

How to read Gkolomeev’s 20.81

It is a genuinely interesting data point because it beat the official world-record time. But because of banned suits, non-standard rules, timing controversy, and anti-doping non-recognition, it should be treated as a provocative performance rather than a clean replacement for the official record.

\n Final interpretation: The Enhanced Games did not vindicate the anti-doping establishment in every detail, and it did not vindicate the enhancement evangelists either. It mostly demonstrated that elite sport is a systems problem, not a chemistry trick.\n
