ChatGPT for Teens has guiding principles anchored in four commitments. In addition to the below defaults, parents have more tools available in parental controls to further customize their teen’s settings.
Put teen safety first even when it may conflict with other goals.
Promote real-world support by encouraging offline relationships and trusted resources.
Treat teens like teens neither condescending to them nor treating them as adults.
Be transparent by setting clear expectations.
All users and developers must adhere to our usage policies.
If our system estimates you are likely an adult, it applies the adult experience by default. Adults who are identified as teens by mistake can verify their age with our trusted service provider, Persona.
If you enter your age as under 18 at sign up or our system estimates you are “likely under 18” we apply the ChatGPT for Teens safeguards by default. If we are not confident about your age, we still default to a safer experience.
Balance safety, helpfulness, and user autonomy:
In addition to our standard protections, we apply developmentally appropriate safeguards for teens, including:
Ads may be shown to adults using the Free tier or Go subscription.
Ads are not currently shown to teens in any tier.
Adults can connect their Apple Health data and supported medical records in Health. Only available in the U.S. and requires users to connect and sign in to providers.
Eligible teens in the U.S. can connect Apple Health and supported medical records in Health. Health is on by default. If accounts are linked through parental controls, a parent or guardian can turn Health off. Connecting records requires signing in to a supported provider and granting permission. Some providers may not support teen access, or may require parental permission to set up a teen account.
Sent after extended conversation.
In addition to break reminders after extended conversation, teens will be sent break reminders more frequently.
When adults nominate a Trusted Contact they may be notified if our automated systems and trained reviewers detect a serious self-harm safety concern.
Parent/Teen linked teen accounts automatically include alerts if we detect signs of acute self-harm or violence-related risk involving their teen; alerts are optional and reviewed by a small group of trained experts. We will not share a teen’s prompt and generation content with their parents.
