Find the right New York City school, and the neighborhood around it. Motley NYC answers families' questions from Motley's data on all 262 NYC neighborhoods and on public, charter and private K-12 schools across the five boroughs.
What you can ask:
- Which neighborhoods fit what matters to your family, ranked by your priorities (playgrounds near home can count too) or compared side by side
- How each neighborhood score is computed, and lists of neighborhoods and schools picked by a stated rule
- A plain-language fit summary for any neighborhood, with safety and health indicators, playgrounds, libraries, accessible subway stations and kids' activities nearby
- Which elementary school is zoned for an address
- Schools by borough, district, grade level, type, admission method or program focus, or a specific school by name
- How NYC admissions works from 3-K through high school (zoned, screened, audition, SHSAT, lotteries and more) and what each method asks of a family
- How a specific school admits students: its method, programs, seats, and applicant counts where NYC publishes them
- Which applications are coming for each child's grade, and when
What to know:
- New York City only.
- No account or sign-in. Every tool only reads; nothing is saved or changed.
- To find a zoned school or place an address, the address you type is sent to NYC Planning's GeoSearch to locate it.
- At elementary level, in-zone students get a guaranteed seat. Some areas, like all of District 1, have no zoned school.
- We never estimate a family's odds of admission. Seats and applicant counts come from NYC MySchools; the competitiveness band beside them is Motley's own reading, not a DOE rating. Most middle schools, and all charter and private schools, have no published applicant counts.
- Neighborhood scores carry the date they were computed. Admission dates are the city's published dates where it has announced them; otherwise we give the usual window and say so.
