Cover letter with a referral

Get a clear, professional cover letter that appropriately and naturally names your referral contact for the job.

byChatGPT
Person at a desk holding a printed cover letter next to a business card labeled with a referrer's name.

A referral is most effective when it appears naturally in the opening paragraph and explains how the connection relates to the role. Mention the person only if they have agreed to be named, and avoid implying they formally endorsed you unless they actually did.

Strong referral opening options

Choose wording that accurately reflects the relationship:

If the referral suggested the role:

[Referral’s full name], [their role at Company name], encouraged me to apply for the [Job title] position after we discussed my experience in [relevant area].

If the referral introduced you to the company:

I learned about the [Job title] opportunity through [Referral’s full name], who shared insights into [Company name]’s work in [relevant area].

If the referral knows your work well:

At the recommendation of [Referral’s full name], I am applying for the [Job title] position. Having worked with me on [project or professional context], [Referral’s first name] recognized a strong match between my background in [skill] and the team’s needs.

If the connection is less direct:

During a recent conversation, [Referral’s full name] suggested I explore opportunities at [Company name]. The [Job title] position immediately stood out because of its emphasis on [specific responsibility].

Final checklist

Keep the letter to roughly one page and focus on two or three qualifications rather than repeating your résumé. Include at least one concrete result, mirror important language from the job posting without copying it excessively, and explain why this particular company interests you. Confirm the referral’s exact title and preferred name before submitting. If the application has a separate “employee referral” field, complete that as well; mentioning the referral in the letter does not necessarily activate an internal referral process.

You can turn the template into a tailored, submission-ready letter or refine how the referral is presented.
