The easiest way to travel by train from London to Paris is the direct Eurostar service. It runs from central London to central Paris, making it faster and simpler than flying for many travelers.
Route and journey time
The Eurostar train and its London and Paris terminals.
- Departure: London St Pancras International
- Arrival: Paris Gare du Nord
- Typical journey: About 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes
- Transfers: None on a direct service
- Time difference: Paris is one hour ahead of London
Eurostar trains travel through the Channel Tunnel. Services usually run several times each day, but frequency and departure times vary by date.
Booking and fares
Book as early as possible, especially for Fridays, Sundays, school holidays, and summer travel. Prices are dynamic: inexpensive seats may be available well in advance, while last-minute tickets can be significantly more expensive.
When comparing tickets, check:
- Whether the fare can be changed or refunded
- The luggage allowance
- The required arrival time at the station
- Whether your travel dates coincide with engineering work or industrial action
A midday train is sometimes less expensive than an early-morning or evening departure. Comparing nearby dates can also produce substantial savings.
When to arrive
This is an international journey, so you cannot arrive just before departure as you might for a domestic train. At St Pancras, passengers normally complete:
- Ticket checks
- Security screening
- UK exit formalities
- French border control
Follow the arrival time stated on your ticket. As a practical rule, arriving 75–90 minutes before departure is sensible, with extra time advisable during busy periods. Boarding closes before the train leaves.
Passport and entry requirements
Carry a valid passport and confirm the current French entry requirements for your nationality before traveling. Visa rules, passport-validity requirements, and electronic travel-authorisation arrangements can differ according to citizenship and may change. Keep proof of accommodation, onward or return travel, and travel insurance accessible in case it is requested.
Luggage and onboard experience
Eurostar generally allows more convenient luggage handling than airlines: you take your bags onto the train and store them in overhead racks or luggage areas. There is no normal checked-baggage process, but limits apply to the number, size, and type of items permitted. Special rules may cover bicycles, large sports equipment, pets, and restricted goods.
Trains usually offer Wi-Fi, power sockets, toilets, and food or drinks for purchase. Availability can vary by train and travel class.
Getting to and from the stations
St Pancras International is served by several London Underground lines through King’s Cross St Pancras, as well as buses and national rail services.
Gare du Nord has Métro, RER, bus, taxi, and suburban rail connections. Keep your Eurostar ticket until you have fully exited the arrival area, then use a separate Paris transit ticket or valid travel pass for onward travel.
For the least stressful trip, choose a direct departure, reserve early, verify passport requirements, and allow generous time at St Pancras.
